BOTTLE OF MEERLUST ESTATE PINOT NOIR 2020
Intense, vivid translucent youthful purple-ruby appearance. The wine shows pronounced lifted perfume on the nose with red berry fruit, musk, wild mushrooms and hints of savoury richness and spice and a clean vibrant minerality. . On the palate there are very pure Pinot fruit flavours on entry with red cherry and musk flavours coupled with fresh acidity. The wine has layered complexity with great elegance and finesse. Very fine lacy, almost powdery tannin on the finish.
Platter’s Guide – 4.5* (91/100)
“This splendid Stellenbosch estate exudes a sense of restrained grandeur and permanence. Indeed, the Myburgh family have owned it since 1757, Hannes Myburgh being the current occupant of the lovely Cape Dutch manor. There has been continuity, too, in the winecrafting: just three cellarmasters since 1975.
The latest, Wim Truter, previously head winemaker at KWV, took over from longtime incumbent Chris Williams at the end of 2019. Another departure was the sad one of Roelie Joubert, who had tended the vineyards since 2001, and passed away in April 2020; his successor is Izak Basson.
Meerlust’s philosophy, that the wines should remain true to their provenance and authentic, has meant in years when flagship Rubicon doesn’t meet the exacting standards, it is declassified to ‘Red’.” Platter’s Guide
